Google Export Adviser launches
There’s a five step guide to exporting covering Getting your business ready, Finding the right market, The bottom line (with a profitability calculator), Reaching new customers and Payment and delivery.
Google Export Advisor also has a useful opportunity finder tool for those that use AdWords. From a keyword it’ll calculate the cost per click (CPC) in different countries. For instance (one for our regular reader, Whirly), did you know that the CPC for “Bath” is £0.92 to £1.37 in the UK, but as little as £0.20 to £0.27 in Spain?
If you use Adwords it’s worth investigating the costs to target different territories, especially if your items are under 2kg and easily shippable.
Google Export Adviser is partnered with partners including UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), HSBC, Royal Mail, Institute of Export (IoE), Applied Language and Alibaba. With the current currency exchange rates Google Export Adviser has launched at an ideal time for UK merchants to take advantage of overseas sales.

What’s changing with Google Product Search?
There could be even more changes around the corner though – Google are beta testing what’s known as the “Product Plus Box”, which is linked to AdWords.
The Product Plus Box is a limited trial in the US and recently expanded to include a few select UK merchants.
At the same time as the Plus Box experiments, some retailers have reported a drop in traffic from Google Product Search of as much as 60-80% in June. If your business relies on Google to send you traffic, whether that be to your eBay listings or especially to your own website you need to be aware of the changes taking place.
ChannelAdvisor are holding an online seminar at 7pm on the 23rd July which will look at what is going on with Google Product Search, reports on some Google ecommerce-related tests you may not know about, and finally give online retailers 10 “ready to implement” strategies to help you counteract the steep decline in traffic and sales from Google Product Search.

Dell customers get 19-inch LCD monitors for under £10.
Dell is being made to honour sales to thousands of people that bought 19-inch LCD monitors for under £10 in Taiwan after it advertised them at the wrong price.
Dell was supposed to offer the monitors at a heavily discounted £89 but put them on for under £10 by mistake, according to PC World.com.
Although the wrong price was only applied for eight hours, 26,000 people placed orders for 140,000 monitors.
Dell has been ordered by the Consumer Protection Commission to make the sales at the price advertised after people complained.
In a statement, Dell apologised and said it will offer reasonable discounts to the orders received under the wrong price.

SMEs defy downturn with continued investment in comms.
These are the key findings of new research by Avaya which also revealed a small business environment that is still investing in communications technology, even during these tough economic times.
Most small businesses in the UK, France, Italy, and Russia indicated that they are investing in technology right now, or plan to do so within the year. In the UK, 79% of businesses, 71% in France, 69% in Italy and 63% in Russia regard communications technology as critical to their business and something that they would spend money on.
When looking at keeping employees as productive as possible, communications tools won pout out in France (with 56 % of those surveyed rating it as most important) and Russia (39%) over compensation and flexible work schedules, which were more deemed more important for productivity in the UK and Italy.
The small businesses have, however, revealed reticence in implementing some critical communications technologies, such as telecommuting and mobility. A majority of those surveyed across multiple markets—80% in France, 78% in Russia, 65% in Italy, 59% in UK—, said they would employ technology to enable employees to work from home if they could trial it first and see the benefits.
Two thirds of respondents from the UK and 60% from France said the most compelling reason for allowing a small business employee to work from home is to increase productivity, while 74% of those surveyed from Italy and 65% from Russia felt that lowering overhead expenses were more important reasons for allowing employees to telecommute.
Yet the survey also revealed that most small businesses did not yet have the capabilities to equip employees to work away from the office. According to the survey, 57% of respondents in Russia, 46% in Italy and France and 42% in the UK say that less than a quarter of their employees – and in some cases no employees – are currently equipped to work away from the office (i.e. on the road, at home, while traveling, etc.). And when it comes to location, most small businesses 67% in France, 66% in Russia 65% in the UK and 61% in Italy, say they need employees at the office or job site every day.
Commented Anthony Bartolo, vice president and general manager of Avaya’s Integrated Office Communications division, “Even though they are ready to invest, [small businesses] still need guidance on what is possible, what is affordable, and what will get them the most benefit. More small businesses recognise the productivity and motivational benefits of being able to let employees work from home or on the road but many are still hesitant to take the leap or are relying on past practices. They need to gain a better understanding of how telecommuting and mobility technologies can deliver a competitive edge. The advanced IP and unified communications technologies available today are not just for big business anymore.”

Google issues first Chrome 2 security update.
The emphasis in Chrome 2 was on speed, but Google also claimed it was the most stable and that around 300 bugs had been fixed since the browser's launch.
The latest patch fixes two flaws in the WebKit open source browser engine at the heart of Chrome.
The first fix is for a memory corruption problem that Google has given a high severity rating.
"Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to a tab crash or arbitrary code execution in the Google Chrome sandbox," said Mark Larson, Google Chrome program manager in a blog posting.
The update addresses the issue through improved memory management, he said.

The second fix is for WebKit's handling of drag and drop functions that given a medium severity rating.
"This may lead to the disclosure of sensitive information when content is dragged over a maliciously crafted web page. This update addresses the issue through improved handling of drag events," said Larson.
