Google Export Adviser launches
There’s a five step guide to exporting covering Getting your business ready, Finding the right market, The bottom line (with a profitability calculator), Reaching new customers and Payment and delivery.
Google Export Advisor also has a useful opportunity finder tool for those that use AdWords. From a keyword it’ll calculate the cost per click (CPC) in different countries. For instance (one for our regular reader, Whirly), did you know that the CPC for “Bath” is £0.92 to £1.37 in the UK, but as little as £0.20 to £0.27 in Spain?
If you use Adwords it’s worth investigating the costs to target different territories, especially if your items are under 2kg and easily shippable.
Google Export Adviser is partnered with partners including UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), HSBC, Royal Mail, Institute of Export (IoE), Applied Language and Alibaba. With the current currency exchange rates Google Export Adviser has launched at an ideal time for UK merchants to take advantage of overseas sales.

What’s changing with Google Product Search?
There could be even more changes around the corner though – Google are beta testing what’s known as the “Product Plus Box”, which is linked to AdWords.
The Product Plus Box is a limited trial in the US and recently expanded to include a few select UK merchants.
At the same time as the Plus Box experiments, some retailers have reported a drop in traffic from Google Product Search of as much as 60-80% in June. If your business relies on Google to send you traffic, whether that be to your eBay listings or especially to your own website you need to be aware of the changes taking place.
ChannelAdvisor are holding an online seminar at 7pm on the 23rd July which will look at what is going on with Google Product Search, reports on some Google ecommerce-related tests you may not know about, and finally give online retailers 10 “ready to implement” strategies to help you counteract the steep decline in traffic and sales from Google Product Search.

Dell customers get 19-inch LCD monitors for under £10.
Dell is being made to honour sales to thousands of people that bought 19-inch LCD monitors for under £10 in Taiwan after it advertised them at the wrong price.
Dell was supposed to offer the monitors at a heavily discounted £89 but put them on for under £10 by mistake, according to PC World.com.
Although the wrong price was only applied for eight hours, 26,000 people placed orders for 140,000 monitors.
Dell has been ordered by the Consumer Protection Commission to make the sales at the price advertised after people complained.
In a statement, Dell apologised and said it will offer reasonable discounts to the orders received under the wrong price.

SMEs defy downturn with continued investment in comms.
These are the key findings of new research by Avaya which also revealed a small business environment that is still investing in communications technology, even during these tough economic times.
Most small businesses in the UK, France, Italy, and Russia indicated that they are investing in technology right now, or plan to do so within the year. In the UK, 79% of businesses, 71% in France, 69% in Italy and 63% in Russia regard communications technology as critical to their business and something that they would spend money on.
When looking at keeping employees as productive as possible, communications tools won pout out in France (with 56 % of those surveyed rating it as most important) and Russia (39%) over compensation and flexible work schedules, which were more deemed more important for productivity in the UK and Italy.
The small businesses have, however, revealed reticence in implementing some critical communications technologies, such as telecommuting and mobility. A majority of those surveyed across multiple markets—80% in France, 78% in Russia, 65% in Italy, 59% in UK—, said they would employ technology to enable employees to work from home if they could trial it first and see the benefits.
Two thirds of respondents from the UK and 60% from France said the most compelling reason for allowing a small business employee to work from home is to increase productivity, while 74% of those surveyed from Italy and 65% from Russia felt that lowering overhead expenses were more important reasons for allowing employees to telecommute.
Yet the survey also revealed that most small businesses did not yet have the capabilities to equip employees to work away from the office. According to the survey, 57% of respondents in Russia, 46% in Italy and France and 42% in the UK say that less than a quarter of their employees – and in some cases no employees – are currently equipped to work away from the office (i.e. on the road, at home, while traveling, etc.). And when it comes to location, most small businesses 67% in France, 66% in Russia 65% in the UK and 61% in Italy, say they need employees at the office or job site every day.
Commented Anthony Bartolo, vice president and general manager of Avaya’s Integrated Office Communications division, “Even though they are ready to invest, [small businesses] still need guidance on what is possible, what is affordable, and what will get them the most benefit. More small businesses recognise the productivity and motivational benefits of being able to let employees work from home or on the road but many are still hesitant to take the leap or are relying on past practices. They need to gain a better understanding of how telecommuting and mobility technologies can deliver a competitive edge. The advanced IP and unified communications technologies available today are not just for big business anymore.”

Google issues first Chrome 2 security update.
The emphasis in Chrome 2 was on speed, but Google also claimed it was the most stable and that around 300 bugs had been fixed since the browser's launch.
The latest patch fixes two flaws in the WebKit open source browser engine at the heart of Chrome.
The first fix is for a memory corruption problem that Google has given a high severity rating.
"Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to a tab crash or arbitrary code execution in the Google Chrome sandbox," said Mark Larson, Google Chrome program manager in a blog posting.
The update addresses the issue through improved memory management, he said.
The second fix is for WebKit's handling of drag and drop functions that given a medium severity rating.
"This may lead to the disclosure of sensitive information when content is dragged over a maliciously crafted web page. This update addresses the issue through improved handling of drag events," said Larson.

Microsoft plans to release free security software.
Microsoft is testing free anti-virus software, but no date has been announced for a public release.
Microsoft says the number of consumers that are signing up to the subscriptions for paid anti-virus has been flat and roughly half have no up-to-date security software.
Dubbed "Morro", the software will tackle viruses, spyware, rootkits and Trojans, but will lack utilities such as parental locks found in commercial security products, according to the BBC.
Security software producers have said they do not see Morro as a threat, but some reports say investors are concerned that Morro will hurt sales of commercial products.
The Morro trials come three years after Microsoft entered the security software market with Live OneCare, which was not a commercial success.
Microsoft has said it will discontinue the Live OneCare service when Morro is released, which is expected to be before the end of the year.

Citrix unveils new application delivery products.
Citrix launched new application delivery products at its annual iForum user conference in Edinburgh today, as it sought to help meet the on-demand requirements of enterprise users.
Attendees at the event were given demonstrations of Citrix Receiver, Dazzle, XenClient, NetScaler VPX and other products. The first three products are free, while NetScaler VPX is a cheaper way for firms to make their smaller web applications widely available.
At the moment, the NetScaler MPX appliance is used by firms to optimise the delivery of major web applications, but its cost is seen as prohibitive when supporting less important applications that don't need the same power behind them.
NetScaler VPX is downloadable software that can be powered on a standard X86 server. The product will be available from September and its price will be revealed then.
Citrix CEO Mark Templeton told iForum delegates that all the products would aid those companies aiming to address on-demand and self-service application distribution needs.
Templeton said, "We want to make things simple for firms when distributing apps, Netscaler is the controller, the delivery network is the internet, and the receiver is the browser. The more you complicate matters the less efficiency you get."
Citrix Receiver is a software client that is downloaded onto a user's machine, which creates a single point of application access. It is designed to keep applications up to date and optimise their performance. It is available now.
Dazzle is slightly more interesting, as on first sight, it seems to contradict what Citrix has spent the last 20 years creating - a suite of software products that virtualise applications.
Dazzle allows enterprise end users to download applications onto their desktops and laptops, which is not the server-based computing and thin-client market Citrix has been serving.
Templeton said Dazzle would allow IT departments to advertise the applications available to users, provide an application search and online help facility to end-users, and help firms migrate to Windows 7 through its self-service distribution capabilities.
"If you know how to use iTunes, you'll know how to use Dazzle," said Templeton. It is available as a tech preview product from today.
When asked whether Dazzle went against what Citrix stood for, Wes Wasson, Citrix chief marketing officer, said, "Dazzle gives IT departments more control over what apps are used."
He explained they could use Active Directory, for instance, to dictate what rights users had to specific applications. It could also use software licence control technology from Citrix to enable software use to be charged to specific departments, and for apps to only be available for fixed time limits, he said.
Wasson also stressed that virtualised applications as well as downloaded ones could be distributed via Dazzle. If required, firms could also use Dazzle to distribute free and approved web software and widgets.
Sean Whetstone, head of IT services at recruitment firm Reed, said, "A self-service app system would be useful to have, providing it doesn't take too much time for my team to manage. It could also be used for external apps too."
Whetstone said firms such as Microsoft could be allowed to sell their software licences through Dazzle, direct to those with responsibility for buying them.
XenClient will be available later this year and is designed for mobile workers. It is free and Citrix developed it in partnership with Intel.
The product allows a single machine to be safely used by staff for both their personal and company work. A demonstration showed how a machine infected with a key logger could collect personal data when it was typed in by a user. But when that user went into an online corporate app, the key logger was not able to collect that data as it was typed - the window it was being typed in was effectively ring-fenced.
Inspector Sanjiv Pattani, an officer with Leicestershire Constabulary, said such a product "may have legs" for his force, providing existing information security needs were addressed.
Pattani has recently rolled out a mobile data systems for 600 officers on the beat and around 275 vehicles. The officers carry Blackberries running Citrix virtualised desktops protected by Citrix VPN security.
Citrix announced that the annual Edinburgh, Antwerp and Munich iForums were being axed and rolled into a single annual "Synergy" event. The first one will be held in Berlin in October 2010.
Templeton said the company's growth in size and products through acquisition and development meant it needed a bigger and all-encompassing show.
The company will also be hoping that by October next year - four months after the usual Edinburgh show, the effects of the global recession may have waned.
Citrix axed 10% of its staff - some 5,000 people across the board - at the beginning of the year, to help cope with the market downturn.

Google apology for slow service.
Google apologised for what it called a "traffic jam" that resulted in slow service or even interruption on the internet search giant's main page.
Gmail and Google's news site were also reported as "sluggish" or unavailable to millions of users for about an hour.
This is not the first time the company has faced such problems.
"An error in one of our systems caused us to direct some of our traffic through Asia," said Urs Hoelzle, a spokesman for the company.
"As a result, about 14% of our users experienced slow services or even interruptions," he said. "We've been working hard to make our services ultrafast and 'always on', so it's especially embarrassing when a glitch like this one happens.
"We're very sorry that it happened, and you can be sure that we'll be working even harder to make sure that a similar problem won't happen again," said Mr Hoelzle, Google's senior vice president of operations.
Sympathy
The outage has called into question the reliability of web-based services.
Google's "efforts to have some of their services, in particular their apps, and to a less extent Gmail, treated as serious business services that one can use instead of locally installed and maintained apps could be seriously undermined by a major outage like that," said Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research.
Early reports claimed a denial of service attack was to blame |
"This is bad news for Google's efforts to build up Apps, and to a less extent, Gmail, as critical business tools. If the mighty Google can stumble, then who can be trusted?" Mr Gottheil told Computerworld.com
Other industry watchers say the interruption might cause businesses to reconsider using these services.
"Maybe companies that are thinking about a cloud strategy - such as Google Apps - need to look into backup clouds" said Sam Diaz, a senior editor at technology news site ZDNet.
On the microblogging service Twitter the service failure became a major topic of discussion.
"Funny how something we lived without for the longest time is suddenly something we can't live without," tweeted simonnet.
While k_sasha tweeted "Sympathies to the Google servers. Happens to everyone. But this is why the world needs more than one search engine."
Napolebsis posted "The Google outage endorses my recent decision to move some services back to offline apps."
This is not the first time that Google has had technical problems.
In February 2009, Google's Gmail service experienced a breakdown leaving millions of people worldwide without access to the free web-based e-mail service for a few hours.
In January, the internet company was hit by technical problems resulting in users being unable to access search results.

Grab a ‘Daily Deal’ on eBay UK
eBay UK have just upgraded ‘Deal of the Week’ to ‘Daily Deal‘ kicking off with a Sony Cybershot DSCW115 digital camera with an RRP of £139.00 and offered at £64.99. Deal of the Day appears to be a recognition that the eBay marketplace has the ability to sell hundreds or thousands of a single item in a day and they’re open to offers if you have a product you’d like to offer.
The products on offer will be largely drawn from Clothes, Shoes and Accessories, Home and Garden and Tech categories. To be considered for the Deal of the Week you’ll need sufficient inventory of a great mass-market, spontaneous, impulse purchase product that’s going to excite buyers and it needs to be offered at an attractive price point. You’ll also need to be able to fulfill the orders on top of your normal business and probably be a Platinum or Titanium PowerSeller with good feedback. To give an indication today’s deal is for 500 cameras and in the 45 minutes of the promotion 40 have already been sold!
Daily Deal is being publicised heavily on the site with the addition of a button on the top site navigation bar. As it becomes better known it should attract buyers to visit the site regularly and anyone that’s comes to spend money on eBay has to be good news in the current economic climate.
If you want to get involved supplying a Daily Deal speak to your account manager in the first instance.

5 Free auctions for all eBay.com sellers.
eBay say this is open to all sellers, but that’s not quite true. To qualify you have to use either the Sell Your Item (SYI) form or Simple listing form, you can “opt out” by using an eBay tool or third-party listing solution. Quite frankly not many pro-sellers will want to use the SYI form so simply won’t be eligible, which is probably a good thing if you expect your item to sell for a high price (More than $62.00 final value and you’re cheaper “opting out”.
Also if you’re going to list an item with a Start/BIN/Reserve price of $18 million or higher you’ll sadly be excluded from the promotion. I’d suggest starting your item at $17,999,999.99 as then your final value fee will be just $20 :-D

The argument for and against price fixing on eBay.
Many eBay sellers are familiar with the dreaded VeRO notice or other communication from a manufacturer demanding that they remove legitimate product from eBay or simply refuse to continue supplying their products to the merchant. Ongoing cases include L’Oreal who in France won a court order banning four brands entirely from eBay along with a €38m fine.
The argument put forward and upheld in a US court decision is that specialist retailers provide additional services to enable the consumer to make an informed decision which simply isn’t provided by Internet merchants. By allowing the same products to be sold online undercutting high street retailers, consumers can purchase at the best possible price having researched the product at a traditional retailer.
Retailers simply can’t afford to provide highly knowledgeable staff to assist consumers with their choices simply to lose the sale when the buyer goes online to make their purchase. In the Leegin Decision (.pdf document), the US courts decided that this would be the end of high-end retailers and decided that minimum price fixing across retail stores and the Internet wouldn’t break price fixing (or as it’s know in the US antitrust) legislation.
I’ve yet to see any hard evidence to support this theory and frankly it sounds like a great excuse made up by retailers wanting to control distribution of their product and shun a free market.
eBay testified at the US congress petitioning against the court ruling and issued a statement saying “Threatened by the surge of online competition, mega-retailers have unleashed teams of lawyers and lobbyists and used price fixing as a tool to squash competitors”
Very simply many of these cases are simply about protecting uncompetitive commercial practices at the expense of consumer choice. In the US not all the Supreme Court Justices agreed with the ruling and one went so far as to say “The only safe predictions to make about today’s [The Leegin] decision are that it will likely raise the price of goods at retail”.
It’s good to see eBay petitioning against such rulings. Each time a retailer wins a verdict to allow price fixing or restrict the availability of their products on eBay or on the Internet in general the only losers are online merchants and the consumer.
Have you had a manufacturer restrict your ability to sell online? If so let us know in comments below. If you’ve had a restriction overturned it would be great to hear how you persuaded the manufacturer to allow the sale of their products online (or how you evaded any potential restrictions).

All new Skype 4.0 available for download.
Skype chat, call quality, ease of use and especially SkypeOut are the things that matter most to me and those are the things Skype does well. SkypeOut is what matters to Skype too - that’s where they make their money, not from video calls which are invariably Skype to Skype and thus free.
If you’ve not used any of the Skype 4 beta releases then when you upgrade the first thing to strike you will be the size of the Skype window. If you find you can’t get used to it then clicking “View > Compact View” will give you a more familiar traditional Skype window. I’m so used to the new Skype having used the Betas for eight months I can’t use the compact view. The old Skype 3 now looks really dated to me, so give the new design a few weeks trial to get used to it, you never know, you might grow to like it too!
